What is cholesterol?

A fat like substance in your blood. Too much cholesterol can increase your risk for heart attack or stroke. 

 

What causes high cholesterol?

  • Being overweight

  • Age

  • Being inactive

  • Family History

  • Poor diet

 

How is it treated?

A heart healthy diet.  Eat a diet that focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, poultry, fish and nuts. Limit red meat, sugar foods, and sugar sweetened beverages. Consume healthy fats like those found in olive oil, avocados, and walnuts.

  • Weight loss

  • Regular exercise

  • Stop smoking

  • Medication
